HISTORY
After having done his first years of experience as a truck-driver within the public-owned furniture-giant TRESKA, in 1980 Mr. George Kovacev (current General Manager of ALKO) decided to establish his own company that would engage in different transport projects on the Yugoslavian market, growing tremendously at that time.
Republic of Macedonia is a famous European exporter of different fruits, vegetables and meat. This fact combined with the booming Federal Yugoslavian economy, created especially great needs for no-nonsense, highly motivated, young transporters that were always there for their clients. These market circumstances certainly created strong basis for growth because what the market needed Mr. Kovacev was delivering!
After 1992 the company started diversifying in different business fields internationally, therefore more business units were created. Full overview of the extra services the company started engaging in, is given as follows:
· International Transport and Logistics · Export & Import of different product categories · Consulting services in International Business
Nowadays the greatest priority of the company is constant search for different transport and logistics projects that have positive net-present-values and return-on-investment of at least 20 %.
CURRENT SITUATION
ALKO is a small, fast growing company with a yearly turnover of roughly EUR 200.000. The privately-owned equipment covers 5 heavy truck combinations; parking and maintenance area; and office infrastructure. The company strives to build a temperature controlled storage area in the short run and by this to enlarge its international wholesale activities on the Macedonian, but also on the Balkan market place.
ALKO’s current most significant business occupation is the international transport and logistics function (TLF). Currently, the company cooperates mostly through contracting its transports and logistics services (TLS) to leading global logistics providers, such as Geo Logistics, DFDS Transport, DHL, etc. but also through cooperating with smaller logistics providers mainly on the European market. In order to better respond to the demands of these important clients, in 2005 ALKO opened its branch office in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
The European transports and logistics market (TLM) where ALKO currently operates with all its transporting equipment, is made of highly intense competition, whereas, the client creates constant high quality demands. In order to comply with those demands, ALKO constantly pays great attention to the mandatory products and services it offers.
OBJECTIVES
The company’s governing objective is clearly the creation of added-value for all stakeholders involved in its ongoing business projects. ALKO’s strategy to achieve this objective is mainly based upon the following:
· Focusing on growth markets and segments through diversification · Building a strong image with sustainable competitive advantage · Development of market share through innovation and latest knowledge application · Development through value enhancing acquisitions and organic investments
